    Why Well Informed?

    I have always felt a need to be able to understand the reasoning for why things work or don’t work. When I was an athletic training student in college, there would be times where I felt like I did not understand the why behind why my clinical preceptor would per form a certain action or even at times I would not understand statements that would come from my professors. One thing that hit me early on was the classic physical therapy/athletic trainer prescription of doing an exercise for 3 sets of 10 reps. Why was this always the set rep scheme for any exercise you do for low back pain?

    Most clinicians would tell you that is the scheme needed to cause muscle hypertrophy. And most AT students/patients/parents etc. Take that for exactly what it’s worth and move on. Maybe they get better maybe they don’t. Sometimes I would do the exercise (let’s say
